Why your WhatsApp display name was rejected
A WhatsApp display name has to relate clearly to your business, must not be a generic word for what you sell, and must not contain URLs, punctuation-as-decoration, or promotional text. Almost every rejection is one of those three.
The rules, as they actually bite
| Rejected | Why | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics | Generic category word | Kimathi Electronics |
| Best Loans Kenya | Promotional claim | Sahihi Credit |
| www.example.com | A URL, not a name | Example |
| SALE!! Shop Now | Promotional text | The shop's name |
| Support | Generic, and not a business | Njiwa Support |
| Jane | A person, not the business | Jane's Salon |
The rule that is hardest to argue with
The name has to reflect what customers already call you. Meta checks it against your website, your other Meta assets and your business verification documents. A name that appears nowhere else reads as unrelated to the business, however real it is to you.
If your trading name and your registered name differ, get the trading name onto your website and your Facebook Page first, then apply. The review is looking for corroboration, and one source is not corroboration.
What to do with a rejection
- Read which rule was cited, and take it literally. Generic and promotional are the two most common and they have different fixes.
- Do not resubmit the same name. Repeated identical submissions do not wear the reviewer down; they use up your rate limit.
- Add the corroboration first. Website, Page, invoices - somewhere a reviewer can see the name in use.
- Consider a name you can actually own. If your brand really is a generic word, this problem will follow you through trademarks and search results too.
A name is not a badge
An approved display name is shown once somebody saves your number or taps into your profile. Being shown to people who have done neither is the green tick, which is a separate and much harder application.
Questions people actually ask
Can my WhatsApp display name be a generic word?
No. Names that are generic terms for a product or category - 'Electronics', 'Delivery', 'Loans' - are rejected because no single business can be that word.
Can I change my display name later?
Yes, and the change goes back through review. Changes are rate limited, so plan on not doing it often.
Does the display name have to match my registered company name?
It has to relate to your business and reflect how customers know you. A trading name is usually fine; something unrelated to the business is not.
