Catalogues in WhatsApp: a shop window, not a shop
A WhatsApp catalogue puts your products inside the chat, and a product message drops one or several into a conversation. It is genuinely useful as a shop window - and in most markets the actual payment still happens somewhere else.
What it is good at
- Answering "do you have" with a picture and a price, in one tap, without leaving the conversation.
- Removing the price question. A published catalogue answers it before it is asked.
- Collecting a cart. The customer picks items and sends you an order message, which arrives as a structured list rather than as prose you have to interpret.
What it is not
It is not inventory. Nothing keeps it in step with your stock unless you build that, and a catalogue showing something you sold last week is worse than no catalogue - it converts an easy sale into an apology.
The most common failure is a catalogue set up once, enthusiastically, and never updated. Prices drift, items go, and the first thing a new customer sees is wrong. Either sync it from the same source as your shop or keep it small enough to maintain by hand.
The order message
When a customer sends a cart, it arrives as a structured message with product ids and quantities. Two consequences worth designing for:
- Confirm in words, immediately. The customer does not know whether an order message is an order. Reply with the items, the total and what happens next.
- It is not payment. Nothing has been charged and nothing is reserved. Treat it as an enquiry that happens to be well structured.
Where it fits
For a business whose real shop is elsewhere, the catalogue is a sales aid inside the conversation and the order still flows through your existing system - which is also where order notifications should come from. For a business whose shop is WhatsApp, it is the difference between typing prices forty times a day and not.
Questions people actually ask
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp?
In some markets, through Meta's own payment integrations. In most, no - the catalogue collects an order and payment happens on a link, on delivery, or by mobile money.
How many products can a WhatsApp catalogue hold?
Thousands, but that is not the useful number. A catalogue is browsed on a phone inside a chat: past a few dozen items, nobody scrolls.
