Choosing the phone number your business will message from

Pick the number your customers will still be messaging in five years, and make sure the business controls the SIM. Almost every painful WhatsApp migration starts with a number that belongs to a person who has since left.

The four options

Number options for business WhatsApp
OptionGood forThe catch
The owner's personal numberStarting today, at zero costIt leaves when they do, and mixes personal and business conversations permanently
A new SIM the business ownsAlmost everybodyNobody knows it yet - it needs publishing everywhere
The existing landlineBusinesses whose number is already on signageVerification must arrive by voice call, and someone has to answer it
A virtual numberCross-border, or where a local SIM is impracticalHigher ban risk in practice, and recovery is harder if the provider is unhelpful

The rules that save you later

  1. The business owns the SIM and the account it is registered to. Not an employee's name, not an employee's ID.
  2. Keep the physical SIM somewhere safe. Recovery, re-verification and moving to a new handset all need it, usually urgently.
  3. Write down which number does what before you have three. Sales, deliveries, support - decided once, published consistently.
  4. Do not put a number on printed material until it is warmed up and you are sure you are keeping it.
  5. Assume you will one day need a second. Design the customer-facing copy so adding one is not a reprint.

The single most expensive mistake here is a number registered in an employee's own name. When they leave on bad terms, the business has no route to the account: WhatsApp support will not hand it over, and the carrier will not transfer a SIM registered to someone else on a third party's say-so.

If you already have the wrong number

Migrating is possible and it is a communications exercise rather than a technical one. Run both numbers in parallel for months, auto-reply on the old one with the new, update every printed and online mention, and expect the long tail to last a year. Do not turn the old one off on a date; let it go quiet.

Questions people actually ask

Can I use a landline for WhatsApp?

Yes, if it can receive the verification call - WhatsApp offers a voice call option for exactly this. It is a good choice for a business line that is already published.

Can I use one number for the app and the API?

No. A number on the WhatsApp Business Platform cannot also be signed in to the WhatsApp app, and this is the constraint that most often forces a second number.
