Why your link has no preview, and whether it matters
A WhatsApp link preview is built from the target page's Open Graph tags. If the page has none, or the crawler cannot fetch it, there is no preview - and no error either. The most common cause is a page that has never had the tags.
What the page needs
<meta property="og:title" content="Order #10432">
<meta property="og:description" content="Track your delivery">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og.png">The image should be a real URL on a host that answers unauthenticated requests, reasonably sized, and not behind a redirect chain. A tracking page that requires a session cookie will render no preview, because the crawler has no session.
Three reasons it silently fails
- The page is behind auth. Order tracking pages usually are. The crawler sees a login screen.
- The link is shortened. Some shorteners break the crawl, and a shortener in a template is a rejection risk on its own.
- The preview was never requested. Some send paths do not generate one at all, and the message arrives as plain text with a blue link.
Whether it matters
Less than people think, and more in one case. For a transactional link to a customer who is expecting it - track your order - the preview adds almost nothing; they are going to tap it. For an unexpected link, the preview is the only thing standing between your message and looking like a phishing attempt.
If you send links to people who did not ask for them, a missing preview costs you trust at exactly the moment you need it. Put the tags on the page; it is ten minutes and it is also what your search results use.
Questions people actually ask
Why does my WhatsApp link have no preview?
Either the page has no Open Graph tags, the crawler cannot reach it, or you sent the message through an API path where preview generation is off. The first is the most common.
Can I control what the preview shows?
Through the page's own og:title, og:description and og:image tags. There is no way to override them per message.
