WhatsApp groups for business: what they are good for, and what they cost
A WhatsApp group is not a broadcast list. Every member can see every other member's phone number and message them directly. For internal teams that is fine. For a group of customers it is a disclosure you made on their behalf.
The two things people use them for
Internal coordination
Drivers, field staff, a shift team. This works, and it is often better than any tool you could buy, because everybody is already there. The caveats are ordinary: the history lives on phones, people leave with their access, and nothing is searchable by the business afterwards.
Customer announcements
This is where it goes wrong, in four ways:
- Numbers are exposed to strangers. Under most data protection regimes you have disclosed personal data to third parties without a basis.
- Anybody can post. Announcement-only mode fixes this, and most groups are not set to it until after the first argument.
- Members recruit from it. Your competitors' salespeople will join and message your customers list one by one.
- Leaving is public. Unsubscribing from a group is a visible act in front of everybody, so people mute instead - and a muted group is a channel you no longer have.
If the goal is one-to-many announcements to customers, the answer is a list you message individually, with consent and an opt-out. How to send to a list safely.
Where groups genuinely win
When the members are meant to talk to each other and already know they are in a room together: a class, a tour party, a project team, a delivery run. The shared visibility is the feature rather than the flaw, because everyone consented to being in the room.
If you run them anyway
- Announcement-only unless the point is discussion.
- Say what the group is for in the description, and pin it.
- Never add somebody without asking - send an invite link instead, so joining is their action.
- Have a second admin, or the group dies with one phone.
Questions people actually ask
Can customers see each other's numbers in a WhatsApp group?
Yes. Every member can see every other member's number and message them privately. For a customer group that is a data protection problem you created by adding them.
Does the Business API support groups?
No. Group messaging is not part of the WhatsApp Business Platform, so anything built on groups cannot move to it later.
