The conversation that stopped: chasing without nagging
Follow up once, timed to their decision rather than your calendar, and give them an easy way to say no. The third chase does not recover the sale; it converts somebody who was undecided into somebody who has blocked you.
Why the timer approach fails
A 48-hour follow-up arrives when your system decided, which has nothing to do with the customer. They are waiting for payday, for a spouse to agree, for the part to be needed. A chase before that moment is noise; a chase after it is too late.
Ask instead. "Shall I check back on Friday?" gets a yes or a no, and either is better than guessing.
What a good follow-up contains
- The context, in one line. They have had a week and forty other conversations.
- Something new. A price held, stock confirmed, a question answered. "Just following up" adds nothing and says so.
- An easy no. "If you've decided against it, just say and I won't chase." People take it, and a clean no is worth more than an unanswered maybe.
- Nothing about your targets. "Before the month ends" is your problem.
The window matters here too. On Facebook and Instagram a follow-up after 24 hours is refused outright unless a tag applies, so "I'll chase next week" is not a plan on those channels - ask for permission to message them while you still can.
When silence is an answer
Two unanswered messages is a no. Recording it as a no, rather than leaving the conversation open forever, is what keeps your unanswered count honest - and an unanswered count you do not trust is one nobody looks at.
The quiet customer who is not ignoring you
Some silences are a phone that broke, a number that changed, or a message that never delivered. Check the delivery status before assuming disinterest - a message stuck on sent for three days never reached anybody, and chasing it is chasing yourself.
Questions people actually ask
How many times should I follow up on WhatsApp?
Once, in most cases, with a clear way to say no. WhatsApp is personal space; a third unanswered chase is what turns a warm lead into a block.
When should the follow-up be sent?
When the customer's decision would plausibly be made - after payday, after the delivery date, after the quote expires - not on a fixed 48-hour timer.
