Asking for a review without becoming the business that pesters
Ask after they have used it, once, and ask whether it was alright rather than for a review. The second question gets answered far more often, and it catches the unhappy customer before they write the review anyway.
Timing is most of it
Delivery is not the moment. The moment is when they have used the thing and formed an opinion - which for a physical product is usually days, for a repair is the next time they need it to work, and for a service is the same afternoon.
Asking at delivery gets you an opinion about the delivery, which is not what you wanted to know.
Ask the better question
Weak:
Please leave us a 5 star review! [link]
Better:
Hi Wanjiku - the tyres went on Thursday. Everything
alright with them? The second gets a reply. If the reply is good, then ask - "Would you mind saying that on our page? [link]". If the reply is bad, you have found a problem privately, which is worth more than the review would have been.
Never make the ask conditional in a way you state out loud - "leave a review if you were happy" is review gating and most platforms prohibit it. Asking everybody how it went, and inviting the ones who volunteer praise to repeat it publicly, is a conversation rather than a filter.
Make it one tap
- A direct link to the review form, not to a homepage.
- Say how long it takes. "Takes about a minute."
- Do not require an account if you have any choice about where you send them.
Once, and then stop
No sequence, no reminder, no second link. A review chase is the clearest possible signal that the message was about you rather than about them, and on WhatsApp it is what turns a satisfied customer into somebody who mutes you.
And the consent question
A review request is marketing in most readings. If your opt-in covered order updates only, it does not cover this - see what counts as consent. The cleanest version is asking inside a conversation the customer is already in, which is another argument for the timing above.
Questions people actually ask
When should I ask for a review?
After the customer has actually used the thing, not when it was delivered. For most products that is days later; for a service it is the same day.
Should I ask for a review on WhatsApp?
It gets far higher response than email and costs more when it annoys. Ask once, make it easy to say the honest thing, and never chase.
