Abandoned cart on WhatsApp: one message, or none
WhatsApp cart recovery works better than email and damages more when it is wrong. The rule that keeps both true: only to people who opted in to marketing, once, and only when the cart is worth a personal message.
The consent problem, first
A number typed into a checkout that was never completed is a number you hold for the purpose of completing that order. It is not marketing consent, under either Meta's policy or most data protection law.
The fix is a checkbox at the point the number is entered, unticked, saying what you will send. What counts as opt-in covers the wording. Without it, cart recovery on WhatsApp is a campaign to strangers who were mid-purchase, which is exactly the traffic that produces blocks.
Why one and not four
| Cost per send | Near zero | A conversation, billed |
| Cost of annoying | Ignored, or unsubscribed | Blocked, and the number carries it |
| Where it lands | A promotions tab | Between their mother and their boss |
| Sequences that work | Three or four | One |
The third row is the whole argument. A WhatsApp message arrives in the same list as personal conversations. That is why it is read, and it is why the tolerance for a second one is so much lower than any email benchmark suggests.
What the one message should say
- Name the item. Not "your cart" - the actual thing, ideally with the picture.
- Answer the likely objection. Most abandoned carts are delivery cost, delivery time or payment doubt. Say the answer rather than repeating the offer.
- Make replying the easy path. "Reply if you want it held" converts better than a link, because it starts a conversation you can actually help in.
- Include the way out. One line, every time.
When not to send at all
- Low value carts. The conversation costs money and the goodwill costs more.
- Repeat abandoners. Somebody who has abandoned three times is browsing, not hesitating.
- Within the hour. They may still be deciding, on the same device, in another tab.
- Out of hours. A cart is never urgent enough to justify a phone lighting up at midnight.
Measure the right thing
Recovery rate is the easy number. Track blocks and opt-outs on the same segment alongside it - a campaign that recovers four percent of carts and loses two percent of your list is not a win, and only one of those two numbers appears in the dashboard by default.
Questions people actually ask
Can I send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?
Only to people who opted in to marketing on WhatsApp, and only as a marketing template if the 24 hour window has closed. Having their number from a half-finished checkout is not consent.
How many abandoned cart messages should I send?
One. Email sequences of three or four work because email is cheap and ignorable; WhatsApp is neither, and the second message is where blocks come from.
